Oldest Pizzerias in New York

New York is considered as one of the oldest hubs in America for the American Pizza. It is said that the first-ever Pizza shop was opened in 1905 in New York City. That pizzeria is still present and is known as one of the oldest pizzerias not only in the city but also it is the oldest pizzeria in the whole country. When the Italians migrate to the country, they started opening pizzerias in the country. Most of the firstly established pizzerias are still present in the country and the families of the founders are still operating those pizzerias. Here are the oldest pizzerias in New York:

8. Denino’s Pizzeria & Tavern

Denino’s Pizza & Tavern was opened in 1937 by John Denino. It is located at 524 Port Richmond Avenue, Staten Island. It was opened as a full tavern. John opened a confectionery and a pool, which started serving beer in 1933 after the prohibition.

After the death of John his son added pizza in the menu, and it started serving pizza in 1955 so it is considered as pizzeria since that date. It is still being operated by the family of John and it has started franchising. The price of Cheese Pie is $15 and Margarita is $19.

7. J&V Pizzeria

John Mortillaro and Vinecent DeGrezia, two friends started a pizzeria business in 1950 at 6322 18th Avenue, Brooklyn. Brooklyn was the place where most of the people, who migrated from Italy, were being settled. They introduced a new way of selling the pizza, that was selling it in the form slices, and they are still offering it. It was the most economical way for customers to eat pizza. The J&V is still being operated by mortillaro’s widow and their sons. The prices for their pizza are $17 for round pie and $24 for Square pie.

6. Nunzio’s Pizzeria

Nunzio’s was established in 1942 by Nunzio Trivoluzzo located at 2155 Hylan Blvd, Staten Island. And it is known as one of the oldest pizzerias at Staten Island. The original place of the pizzeria is not the same as the current place, in 1960 it was shifted from south beach to hylan boulevard. In 1960 the owner sold the pizzeria to Vinect Coppolla and Al Bruno so it is not in the hands of founders now. The price at Nunzio is currently $14.

5. Pasty’s Pizzeria

Patsy’s Pizzeria was established in 1933 by Pasquale Patsy and his wife Carmella Lancieri, East Harlem. They were one of those who migrated from Italy. The pizzeria is still being operated. After the death of Patsy it was being run by his wife for about 21 years till 1991 an then she sold it to Frank Brija and Adem Brija, who is still the owner of Patsy’s Pizzeria. The pizza was so famous in the city that the demand for people was increased a lot and they had to increase the apace by buying more buildings in the neighborhood, and a lot of celebrities visited the pizzeria a lot, due to its popularity. The prices are $12 for Original Coal Oven Pizza and $18 for Margherita.

4. Eddi’s Pizza

The Eddie’s Pizza was established in the late 20s as a bar by Eddie Fanelli, according to the owner of the pizzeria. The pizzeria had financial loss due to the burndown of the original bar. So, they had to sell it DiVittorio in the Early 1980s. They extended the business by adding a dining room into it. The pizza they were selling was considered as different from other old pizzerias due to the trademark “Home of the Bar Pie”. Their pizza was different because the pizza is thin, having a small crust that made it unique in the city. Also, they add cheese and tomato by melting together in their crust. The prices are $7 for bar pie and $13.75 for large.

3. John’s of Bleecker Street

John Sasso established John’s of Bleecker Street in 1929 at Sullivan Street, Greenwich Village. It was then shifted to Bleecker Street, which is its current location and named with the current location as well. John was also an immigrant in Italy. The pizzeria was operated by Sasso’s family until 1954 and then they sold it. It is now run by JPeter Castelloti and Robert “Bob” Vittoria. The prices of pizza are $17 for medium and $ 20 for Large.

2. Totonno’s Pizzeria Napolitana

Totonno’s was established by Anthony (Totonno) Pero in 1924 at 1524 Neptune Avenue, Coney Island, Brooklyn. He was the employer of Lombardi’s and is known as the first-ever pizzaiolo in America. He is the one who brought pizza to America. This Pizzeria is still working and owned by the family of Pero. The Price of the Pizza is $18.50 here.

1. Lombardi’s

Lombardi is the first-ever Pizzeria not only in New York but also in the whole of America. It was founded in 1905 by Gennaro Lombardi at 32 Spring Street, New York. Gennaro Lombardi is also known as the father of American Pizza. He trained the owners of other old Pizzerias too. It is still being operated by its family. The prices of Pizza are $18.50 for small and $22.50 for large.

Conclusively we can say that the pizzeria business of oldest brands is still famous in the New York and they are providing the best pizza for a long time. Most of these brands were introduced there by the immigrants of Italy. They also taught others owners to open their pizzerias all over the country
